Ötztal Alps

A rugged mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps, forming the border between Austria and Italy. In Protopia, the Ötztal Alps serve as the setting for the story of Ötzi, Claudia, Denisa, and Guntram — a cradle of early human community, survival, and betrayal.

Narrative Role in Harmonia’s Journey

The Ötztal Alps represent both shelter and isolation. It is a place where human life is shaped by the elements, where kinship and knowledge form out of necessity. It is also the site of the first political murder in the narrative, giving the place a mythic weight.

Location Description

The Ötztal Alps are arrayed at the head of the Ötztal valley, a side valley of the Inn river southwest of Innsbruck, Austria. One line of summits forms part of the border between Austria and Italy.
