Ötzi, known from archaeological discovery as the Iceman, is reimagined in Protopia as a thoughtful tribal leader in the Ötztal Alps around 3255 BCE. He is depicted as both practical and principled — a man whose leadership is rooted in experience rather than ambition.
Ötzi stands as a symbol of pre-political wisdom — an elder whose power comes from earned respect rather than domination. His murder is not just a personal loss, but the first break in the social fabric the book traces: the shift from leadership to rulership, from community to control.
